Fortunata y Jacinta Dos historias de casadas Spanish Edition eBook Benito Pérez Galdós

I would have given the edition itself 4 stars; it has some misspellings and skipped letters. And I know this because I once spent a year reading no other novel for pleasure. So not only do I have 2 other editions, I have whole chunks of the novel in my head; I know a mistake when I see it.
The novels begins with the history of the Santa Cruz family, principally of the man who is married to Jacinta but returns to Fortunata again and again as her "lover." This is a misnomer; Juanito Santa Cruz, the scion of a well-off family enriched by commerce, is incapable of loving anyone but himself. However, he is not presented as the one-sided evil don Juan; this becomes clear as the story continues.
The novel is full of fascinating characters of 19th-century Madrid, from beggars and prostitutes through pharmacists and office workers to counts and comfortable bourgeois families, all against the backdrop of late 19th-century Spanish history and politics. The characters and the city become ingrained in the reader's heart and mind. It is for good reason that Benito Pérez Galdós is called the greatest Spanish writer after Cervantes.
If you go to Madrid after reading this novel, be prepared to run around the central part of the city identifying the streets and even the houses (if they're still there) where the characters lived. Few novels come and remain so alive as "Fortunata y Jacinta."

Absolutamente recomendable!
I staarted reading the book out of curiosity but by the third chapter I was hooked, impressive way to describe the characters of the book, you can almost see them dancing right in front of you. I definitely would recommend this book.
I had to read this book for my major in modern languages. Some long novels are worth the read, but this was one of my least favorite ones, as the story was very dull and hard to follow, reading it in Spanish and in English.I would recommend watching the movie instead.
